Elaine of Corbenic

Unrequited Love

She came when evening came, - her feet

The cool grass comforted, -

Where love through morn and noon-day heat

Her seeking steps had led

To him who had no love for her,

And nigh whose life was dead.”

(From Le Morte D’Arthur)

Elaine has a pure heart. While not always moral, she is true to her ideal, which she would do anything to achieve. She loves Lancelot long after any sane person would have moved on. She seems desperate and crazy, and she is, yet her hope and patience is inspiring.  In a way, she is a hero because she dreams an impossible dream and never gives up on it.
